The following statement was issued today by Unitarian Universalist Association President Rev. Peter Morales:
I applaud the actions of the Washington Legislature in extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples, and to Gov. Chris Gregoire's leadership and stated intention to sign this marriage equality bill into law. With this action, Washington has demonstrated its commitment to the American ideal that all citizens are entitled to equal protection under the law. Just days after the ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the unconstitutionality of California's Proposition 8, Washington's support for marriage equality is another step on the long journey toward justice for all.
I am especially grateful for the work of Unitarian Universalists in Washington, and I thank them for their powerful commitment to this cause. The Unitarian Universalist Association is proud to recognize the contributions of our ministers and members in the ongoing struggle for marriage equality. As a result of their unwavering efforts, the lawmakers of Washington know that there are religious people called by their faith to speak out in support of the freedom to marry.
Today we celebrate this victory. Tomorrow and in the days to come, Unitarian Universalists will continue to stand on the side of love until the freedom to marry belongs to everyone.
The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is a faith community of more than 1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance, and social justice.
The UUA has supported civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people for several decades. The denomination voted in 1996 to advocate for full legal marriage equality.
