UUA President Endorses the National Equality March

Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), issued the following statement today:

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) strongly endorses the National Equality March and the goal of achieving full legal equality for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender (BGLT) people. The inherent worth and dignity of every person is a foundational principle of our Unitarian Universalist faith. Unitarian Universalists have long been at the forefront of the struggle for BGLT rights.

Unitarian Universalists from around the country will be standing together on the side of love on October 11th. I will be among the many Unitarian Universalists who will be marching for equality in Washington, DC. Preceding the march, I will lead a worship service at All Souls Church, Unitarian, lifting up our shared vision of equality for all people, and I invite any and all who share this vision to gather with us. Unitarian Universalists will also be hosting solidarity events and petition signings in their local congregations and communities nationwide.

Our Unitarian Universalist faith compels us to call for full social and legal recognition for BGLT people, for our sons and daughters, our mothers and fathers, our friends and neighbors. Full equality under the law is the right of all Americans. BGLT people who want to serve their country in the armed forces, who want to provide loving homes to children in need, who want to join together in marriage, should not be treated as second-class citizens. On October 11th, we will take one more step towards the day when the laws of this country protect the basic human rights of all Americans. I invite you all to stand with us on the side of love.

The Unitarian Universalist Association is a faith community of more than 1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance and social justice.

The UUA has supported civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people for over forty years. The denomination voted in 1996 to advocate for full legal marriage equality for same-sex couples.
