Unitarian Universalist Association Banners Trumpet Support for SJC Decision

January 12, 2004

Taking advantage of its location directly adjacent to the Massachusetts State House, the Unitarian Universalist Association headquarters at 25 Beacon St. today displayed two large banners proclaiming support for the right of same-sex couples to marry. The banner on the east side of the building, overlooking the State House lawn, measures 12 feet high by 20 feet long and reads, “Civil Marriage is a Civil Right.” A smaller banner (5 feet by 10 feet) overlooking Beacon Street reads, “UUA Supports Freedom to Mary.” Both banners include the UUA’s flaming chalice symbol.

The UUA took this action to publicize religious support for the November 18, 2003, Supreme Judicial Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage in Massachusetts. Since the court’s ruling, the State House has been the scene of rallies by both supporters and opponents of the decision. The UUA has a long history of advocacy on behalf of gays and lesbians, and in 1996 the association’s General Assembly passed a resolution calling for civil marriage rights for same-sex couples.

“Unitarian Universalist support for same-sex marriage is the result of our deeply-held religious commitment to support full equality for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people,” said UUA President Rev. William G. Sinkford. “The citizens of Massachusetts should be proud that this state is at the forefront of the growing movement to extend basic civil rights to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, and it is our fervent hope that Massachusetts can be a model for other states to emulate.”
