All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, DC To Host Pro-Choice Events

April 25, 2004

On the Eve of the March for Women’s Lives, All Souls Church, Unitarian will host a special pro-choice event: Carrying the Fire: Voices for Women's Lives, featuring Unitarian Universalist Association President Rev. William Sinkford and former Senator and presidential candidate Carol Moseley Braun. The event is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2004 at All Souls Church, Unitarian, 1500 Harvard St. NW, Washington DC.

Rev. Sinkford noted, “Reproductive freedom is the bedrock of women’s freedom. And a society of free women in the only kind in which there can be true justice. We are here to make sure that this precious freedom remains within the reach of all American women, regardless of race, income or religion.”

On Sunday, April 25, at 9:50 a.m., All Souls will host a special worship service led by the Rev. Dr. Rebecca Parker, a leading feminist theologian and p resident of the Starr King School for the Ministry. Rev. Parker will deliver a moving sermon examining the issue of reproductive freedom from a liberal theological perspective.

After the service upwards of 1,000 pro-choice worshippers will stream out into the street to join the March for Women’s lives, marching to the beat of a powerful drum. Noting that Unitarian Universalism has long been in the vanguard of a growing religious presence in support of reproductive choice, the Rev. Meg Riley said, “Ministers who counseled pregnant women before abortion was legal will walk with colleagues who were born after Roe v. Wade was passed. Unitarian Universalists have been marching for women’s lives since 1848 in Seneca Falls, and we will proudly march on Sunday.”

The Rev. Robert Hardies, senior minister of All Souls, elaborated on his religious commitment to reproductive freedom. “As people of liberal faith,” he explained, “we believe that by empowering women to make responsible moral choices, we enrich life’s possibilities for everyone.”

Both events are free and open to the public.

Cameras are welcome in the Sanctuary for the evening event on Saturday, April 24. Photo opportunities will be available after the service on Sunday, April 25.
