UUA is recipient of RCFM "Peace and Justice" award
January 30, 2005
The Unitarian Universalist Association is honored to be the first recipient of the new “Peace and Justice” award given by the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry (RCFM). The award, to be granted annually in recognition for outstanding contributions to the cause of marriage equality, will be accepted by UUA president the Rev. William G. Sinkford at the RCFM’s anniversary celebration on February 10 in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House. Members of the public are invited to attend the luncheon and awards ceremony, which will be held from 12 – 1 p.m.. The RCFM invites interested persons to RSVP by sending an email to info@rcfm.org.
Sinkford stated, “I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Our close relationship with the RCFM has enriched the UUA’s work on behalf of marriage equality. When justice ultimately comes for gay and lesbian families across our nation, a key factor will be interfaith cooperation of the kind exemplified by the RCFM.” Sinkford added, “I am looking forward to this opportunity to celebrate the historic events of the past year. Beginning last May 17, when it was my joy to officiate at the marriage of Julie and Hillary Goodridge, the state of Massachusetts has granted to thousands of committed same-sex families the legal recognition and protection they deserve.”
Other awards will be granted to Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, for helping build bridges among faith communities, and to state Sen. Marian Walsh and state Rep. Marie St. Fleur, in recognition of their outstanding courage and leadership supporting equal marriage and upholding the religious freedom of all of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal, creedless religion with Judeo-Christian roots; it traces its history in North America to the first Pilgrim and Puritan settlers, and has numbered among its members five U.S. presidents. The UUA has a long history of support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Since the late 1960s, individual UU ministers have conducted religious services of union for gays and lesbians, and in 1996 the association officially adopted a position in favor of legal marriage rights for same-sex couples.
