UUA to Host Anniversary Reception for Same-Sex Couples
May 13, 2005
What: An Anniversary Reception for Unitarian Universalist Same-Sex Newlyweds and Special Guests
When: Tuesday, May 17th, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm
Who: Special Guests Hillary and Julie Goodridge, Lead GLAD Attorney Mary Bonauto and 9 of the other 12 Goodridge plaintiffs, along with other newlywed couples from across the state.
Where: The UUA National headquarters at 25 Beacon Street, Boston, MA (#25 is immediately adjacent to the Massachusetts State House and next door to the Parkman House).
The family-friendly reception will feature music, cake, and celebratory toasts from UUA President, the Rev. William G. Sinkford, the Goodridges, and Cambridge couple Marcia Hams and Susan Shepherd, the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license, just after midnight on May 17, 2004. To celebrate this first “Paper” anniversary, Eliot Hall will be festooned with thousands of colorful heart-shaped cards made by children in UU congregations around the world. The sheer volume of these touching cards is a dramatic testimony to the power of love and family. The cards are a moving display that offers a unique photo opportunity.
Unitarian Universalists have been affirming same-sex couples and their families for decades. Four of the seven plaintiff weddings last May 17 were performed by UU ministers. The anniversary party will be held in the same room in which the Goodridges were married by Rev. Sinkford a year earlier.
At 3 p.m., newlywed guests are invited next door to the State House steps to join the group anniversary photo of same-sex couples organized by GLAD and Mass Equality.
Members of the media are warmly invited to attend.
