Hispanic Unity of Florida Receives Donation of Over $23,000 from Unitarian Universalist Association

July 2, 2008

Hispanic Unity of Florida and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) are pleased to announce that $23,702.70 was raised for Hispanic Unity at the UUA’s 2008 General Assembly, held in Fort Lauderdale from June 25 through June 29. Hispanic Unity is the largest non-profit in Broward County dedicated to serving Hispanics and other members of the community. The donation will support the renovation of Hispanic Unity’s Education, Training and Immigration Center.

The bulk of the donation was collected during an offertory at General Assembly’s morning worship service on June 29, 2008. Josie Bacallao, president and CEO of Hispanic Unity, spoke at the worship. “[The Education, Training and Immigration Center] will help empower people in this community. Every year, more than 600 adult students will learn English, over 1,100 individuals will be assisted with free income tax preparation (by volunteers, in four languages), and 200 clients will receive immigration services,” said Bacallao.

Three thousand Unitarian Universalists, including attendees from all fifty states and several foreign countries, participated in this year’s General Assembly. In addition to conducting the business of the Unitarian Universalist Association and raising money for Hispanic Unity, attendees also participated in a public rally in Ft. Lauderdale with local leaders from the immigrant and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender communities.

Hispanic Unity of Florida is a private nonprofit 26-year old human services agency serving 22,000 clients annually, primarily new immigrants from 25+ countries. For more information, please visit Hispanic Unity's website.

The Unitarian Universalist Association is a faith community of more than 1000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance and social justice. For more information about General Assembly, please visit our online coverage of General Assembly 2008.
