Unitarian Universalist Congregations Nationwide Participating in International Day of Climate Action
As part of the 350.org International Day of Climate Action on Saturday, October 24th, over 40 Unitarian Universalist (UU) churches across the United States have organized activities in their local communities to advocate for the reduction of carbon emissions. The International Day of Climate Action, organized by 350.org, is a worldwide initiative comprised of more than 2,000 events in over 140 nations. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has endorsed the 350.org campaign, which is dedicated to creating an equitable global climate treaty that lowers carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to below 350 parts per million.
In anticipation of the International Day of Climate Action, UUA President Rev. Peter Morales will be delivering the interfaith prayer at the 350 Climate Convocation at 2pm on Sunday, October 18th , 2009, in the Harvard University Memorial Church. “The delicate balance of life on Earth is threatened, and with it the wellbeing of all people, especially the poorest and most vulnerable,” says Morales. “Religious communities have an obligation to take action now for the future of the planet and humanity.” Morales’s complete statement in support of the International Day of Climate Action is available in the UUA press room; he has also signed the Interfaith Call for 350.
With support from the UU Ministry for the Earth, Unitarian Universalist congregations have organized a variety of International Day of Climate Action events that will communicate a religious message of concern for the environment and make a positive impact in their local community.
The Towson UU Church in Maryland is throwing a “350 Caulking Party” to weatherize the congregation’s building and train individuals to make their homes more energy efficient. The celebration of the International Day of Climate Action at the Northwoods UU Church in the Woodlands, TX, will include an organic potluck and a talk by Mary Strauss, Sustainability Director for the City of Bryan, TX. And the statewide group Washington State UU Voices for Justice is organizing a “Bike and Walk for Climate Change Action” event.
