"In this community celebrated for its liberal spirit..."
Rev. Pallas Stanford
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Santa Cruz County, CA
In this community celebrated for its liberal spirit, many people have likely been touched by reports that the professed motive for the deadly shooting last Sunday at a Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville, Tennessee was hatred of liberals and gays. I'm writing therefore to share the good news that, locally and nationally, Unitarian Universalists are responding to this event with natural shared grieving, with gratitude for the outpouring of caring coming from across all kinds of political and religious "divides", with pride in the wit and courage of members who tackled and subdued the shooter, with humility in the struggle to practice forgiveness, and with courage and determination to continue practicing the bold witness of our conviction that the divine would rather see us working to insure the worth and dignity of every person than working to censure the partnerships created by loving adults in our midst.
