"We're not going to extinguish the Chalice on this night..."
Rev. Dennis McCarty
UU Congregation of Columbus, IN
July 31, 2008
We're not going to extinguish the Chalice on this night. Let the flame burn on, like the flame of courage, love, and inspiration in the human heart, which ignorance cannot ever quite destroy.
At Monday evening's Vigil, UUA [Unitarian Universalist Association] President Bill Sinkford said, "There is no capacity that we need more than the ability to come together as people of faith across the boundaries of theology and liturgy and practice that we are so often told must keep us apart. There is no capacity that is more important than for us to be able to be...together as one community... In the face of great tragedy, human beings, time after time, have done exactly this.”
We can do it. We will do it. From our various places, from our separate churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples, we can come together and be with one another and learn from one another. And hearts can be enlightened—and the past, which has too often been a reflection of anger and evil—must and will give way to a future which will be a culmination of hope and goodness.
Amen. May it be so.
