Things to Do
Now that you have read this far, it’s obvious you’ve decided that you want to
give yourself a chance to find fellow Unitarian Universalists (UU) and things to do that will help you
keep your faith and spirituality close to your heart and allow it to open your
soul.
The hardest thing to do (but the most crucial part) is getting
started. You absolutely, positively have to say, “Okay, TODAY I’m going to write
this person or call this office or go do this thing.” You cannot put it off or
it will never get done (unless you’re telepathic). This kit has been designed to
make it easy for you. We have phone numbers of people at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) who will call
you back (so it’s not on your phone bill) and are more than happy to answer your
questions. We have addresses so it only takes a stamp and a few minutes to have
a world of information delivered to your door. As many a parent has said, “You
have no excuses, just do it!” Once you’ve contacted people in your area, at your
local church, or at the continental level, you should receive tons of
information that says what’s happening, what they can offer you, what you can
offer the world. Now’s the time to pick and your choice really depends on two
things: what’s available and what you want. To really discern what is important
to you at this juncture in your life, ask yourself these questions:
- How much time do I want to spend doing UU stuff? A few hours a
week? A few hours a month? A couple of days a year? Some time
every day? Every waking moment of the rest of
my existence?
- Do I want to spend this time with other people or by myself?
- Do I want to do some active things or just sit at a dinner or service?
- Do I want to take on any leadership roles in the activities I choose ?
- Do I want to be with only UUs my own age or would I be comfortable spending
time with older young adults?
