Where did this thing come from?
Welcome to the spectacular world of Unitarian Universalist (UU) Young Adulthood!! This kit is designed to help you adjust to the different world of Unitarian Universalism beyond the youth community. Up until now you have probably been involved solely with your youth group at church by going to conferences and overnights, if you’ve were involved at all. That aspect of Unitarian Universalism is crucial to the development of your personal theology and your spirituality. We want you to be able to rediscover and capture that energy as a young adult. Why do I have this thing?
It is a fact of our faith that the average congregant is over fifty years old. It is also a fact of our faith that most young adults leave the church after high school, and don’t have the energy or inclination to return. We hope that through this packet we will strengthen our ties to each other, increase the number of young adults in our churches, and help these young adults retain the faith that has made our young lives so rich.
Who wrote this thing?
After a Working Group at YRUU's (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists) Youth Council in 1990 came up with the idea, the Youth Council wrote a resolution for the creation of the kit. Then Kat Mitchell headed a task force to get it started. It was then passed on to the YRUU Steering Committee, and Jennifer Culllison prepared the first draft for Youth Council 1991. Then feeling it somewhat incomplete, it was sent to the Youth Office and edited by intern Julie Rising. This version was updated in 1996 by intern Kathy Daneman. Along with the work of the above people, many members of YRUU, C*UUYAN (Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network), and the YAMs (Young Adult Ministries) Working Group have had a voice in this, making it truly a collaborative effort.
What’s in it?
There are resources, contacts, readings, activities, ideas, etc. The concerned post high school youth of YRUU’s Youth Council hoped that this would be a helpful way of connecting new young adults with an expanded vision of the Unitarian Universalist faith. Good luck, enjoy, and please let the Youth Office know if you think anything else should be included in this packet.
