Young Adult & Campus Ministry Anchor Congregations

First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Ohio-Meadville District
First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh's campus ministry—Unitarian Universalist Community on Campus (UUCC) at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh—provides an outlet and sense of community for existing Unitarian Universalists and like-minded students to explore their spirituality during important developmental years. The group works in collaboration with students and recent graduates to develop a ministry composed of three components 1) Worship/Spiritual Development from a Unitarian Universalist perspective 2) Social Justice Awareness and Action 3) Socialization. The Campus Ministry collaborative philosophy is simply “You (the students) provide the inspiration; we (the coordinator and congregation) will provide the grunt work.” With distribution list of over 100 young adults, the campus ministry group meets every Wednesday from 8:00-10:00 p.m. throughout the school. The students have a half hour long circle worship followed by a check-in. They then have a guest speaker, plan for upcoming Social Justice event, or continue discussion based on the theme of the worship. Finally, a free meal and socializing ends the evening. Additionally, the group organizes monthly young adult potlucks and a leads yearly worship service for the entire congregation.
