Unitarian Universalist Campus Ministry Models

What Students Can Do

With an estimated 2,500 Unitarian Universalist students aging into the college community each year, we have a growing population of people seeking our liberal religious voice.  In addition, thousands of additional people find Unitarian Universalism while in college, making campus ministry one of our wisest places to invest time and money. Building on the empowerment model of leadership that Young Religious Unitarian Universalist (YRUU) teaches, students are often the primary leaders of a campus ministry program. However, we are not re-creating YRUU on campus for two reasons—independence and education.  Students may potentially take on every conceivable role within a campus ministry, but most importantly they are participants, project leaders, spokespersons on campus, worship associates, and outreach organizers.

Most of the students involved in campus ministry will be undergraduates, first time to college, and between the age of eighteen and twenty-three.  A majority of these students will have experience with Unitarian Universalism, YRUU, and church life.  A smaller majority will have grown up Unitarian Universalist and understand more intimately the identity and history of our liberal religion. In general these students will be single, living on their own for the first time, engaging in a new social life, and beginning a serious journey into who they are in this world. Other students who may round out your campus ministry will include graduate students, undergraduate students outside the eighteen to twenty-three year-old age range, parents, and ex- or pre-military members.
