Getting Help

The best place to look to for help is from your local Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregation and university system. The relationships you build with these people will be the strongest because they will be most familiar with the environment you are working in and their connections and support of campus ministry will reach people in your geographic area.  While it is advisable to stay in touch with District, Regional and Continental UU Young Adult leaders, know that their primary role is to help inspire and focus your work.  Get to know the staff at your local UU congregation and university system, particularly related to interfaith, campus chaplaincy, and student activities programs.

District Services

Young Adult & Campus Ministry Committees

Each Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) District (there are twenty) and Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC) Region (there are four) is working to develop an active and permanent committee on Young Adult & Campus Ministry. The committee name may vary, but the vision and activities are fairly consistent. As a local group leader, after you have registered your group on ConnectUU.com you should receive several phone calls and emails each year from the committee.  Specifically the Young Adult and/or Campus Representative to ConCentric will be in touch with you about how things are progressing with your group as part of an annual survey and report to other District and Regional Young Adult and/or Campus Ministry Representatives.

The Committee may also host one or more leadership development events open to all people engaged in Young Adult & Campus Ministry.  This may take the form of a workshop at the Annual Meeting of Congregations, a community networking event such as a District or Regional Retreat, or potentially a personal visit to your campus ministry from a member of the Committee.

ConCentric Representatives

Each year every UUA District and CUC Region is invited to send one Young Adult Representative to the annual business and networking meeting of Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network (C*UUYAN) called ConCentric (usually early August for 4 days).  An optional second Campus Representative is encouraged however there are still very few attending.  The primary role of the ConCentric Representative is to report on the activities in their respective geographic areas and to participate in the decision-making for continental vision, priorities and actions.  Representatives are in close touch with the Young Adults in Christian Ministries (YACM) Regional Organizing Consultants and UUA/CUC Field Staff including any Campus/Young Adult District Staff.

Note: ConCentric is open to all people of all ages and is equally a business meeting as it is a networking opportunity for leaders.  Each year there is a strong caucus of campus ministry organizers attending who may or may not hold the representative position.  Representatives are funded for all travel, registration, housing and food by the District/CUC/UUA Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry through a travel equalization fee (in 2004 it was $375.00 USD).  If you are interested in serving, which may mean starting up the Campus Representative position, contact your current ConCentric Young Adult Representative or Regional Organizing Consultant.

Young Adult and Campus Ministry Regional Organizing Consultants

Our UUA Young Adult & Campus Ministry Regional Organizing Consultants (ROC) are the newest addition to our staff and serve as the backbone of our grassroots networking and information clearinghouse services. These seven “ ROCs” as they’re fondly referred to are geographically dispersed across Canada and the USA. ROCs are primarily a resource and referral service for local young adult and campus groups. They also serve as advisors to District Young Adult & Campus Ministry committees. Occasionally, ROCs will be active with a District or Regional conference, meeting or other special event.

The #1 Priority of ROCs are to communicate twice annually with each Young Adult and/or Campus Representative. Through this communication, we ensure that we have a relationship with the local community and respond to concerns and needs from campus groups, young adult groups and congregations. If you are a local group leader or are interested in starting up a group or have a question related to Young Adult & Campus Ministry outside your District, please contact your ROC who can help point you resources sometimes including other interested young adults and/or college students nearby.

UUA Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry

The primary role of the Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry is to provide services and support to Unitarian Universalist member congregations of the UUA and the CUC.  The physical main office is located on the 5th floor of the UUA Building at 41 Mt. Vernon Street on Beacon Hill in Central Boston.  The Office coordinates and manages the work of the YACM Regional Organizing Consultants and interacts with CUC and District Staff on a regular basis.  The Office also plans longterm for new curriculum and other print resources and provides information packets upon request to campus ministry organizers.
