Mission Statement + Priorities (Goals, Objectives) = Activities

Develop a simple two-sentence or less mission statement. You'll need one to have your group recognized by a university and congregation. You are welcome to use the following:

Sample Unitarian Universalist Campus Ministry (UUCM) Mission Statement: We the students of College/University gather for spiritual worship, to study the Unitarian Universalist faith, and for justice-centered, authentic relationships, community and social activism. (25 words)

Your priorities (goals & objectives) develop out of your mission statement, and in the context of your specific campus ministry. The context may include:

  • University size
  • Geography Identity (race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, culture...) demographics of your community
  • Age demographics
  • Age of members
  • UU experience of members
  • Current events (i.e. 9/11, war, elections, school politics, etc)

Keep your priorities to 3 or less. You want to be able to remember them easily and also feel the euphoria of success when they are done well!

The following questions are offered for discussion with UU students, staff, faculty, clergy, and congregational members to help form your mission statement & priorities:

  • How can we establish a visible liberal religious presence on campus?
  • How can we integrate students and young adults into our congregational community?
  • How can we, as UUs, support students' growth?
  • How can we help students appreciate where they have come from and where they are going?
  • How can we affirm the inherent dignity and worth of students on today's campuses?
  • How can we creatively challenge student attitudes on campuses, which reflect racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, or otherwise insensitive perspectives?

--> As a UUCM Group leader, you want to be able to state simply and quickly the mission of your UUCM Group and the primary activities (based on your priorities) that you are engaged in to newcomers and for the institutions that support and sponsor you (the college/university and/or the UU congregation).
