Communications

Email

Start two email lists. One for announcements to all the students and church members involved in the program, which we recommend be moderated to minimize the amount of email. And one for discussions which can be unmoderated. For the announcements list we generally encourage organizers to mass-subscribe, or automatically subscribe students. For the discussion list people should give their approval first or self-subscribe. Having two lists is helpful to prevent burn out over email, and ensuring that people get the information they need about the activities of your campus ministry.

You can set up an email list through the Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry and the Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network (C*UUYAN). Just visit newlist.uuyan.org and fill out the online application, it is free! This way your group will have a yourgroupname @ uuyanorg address allowing other students and bridgers to find your group easily. We encourage groups to establish the email list as the name of their university full in order to minimize confusion between lists, however abbreviating university of into “uof” or leaving out “college” is fine to shorten the email list name.

Website

If you become a recognized student group you should have access to free space on the university server, or you can use space on your own churches website if they have one. Best information to have on the web is who the contact is, when you meet, where you meet, how to join an email list, and the name and purpose of your campus ministry. Be sure to add the website URL to your ConnectUU.com Group Profile. You can also set up a free website using our templete at BUURN.org. Webpage maintenance check-list:

  • Update the events listing page as new events come up or rooms are reserved.

  • Take pictures of people and events and post them on the WWW site.

  • Update the contacts page for the local campuses and local congregations as necessary.

  • Keep links current with District Young Adult & Campus Ministry Committee and the Continental Unitarian Universalist (UU) Young Adult Network (among others).

  • Maintain FTP info (upload username and password).

Regular Phone Bank—Monthly, Fall/Spring, or Yearly

Unitarian Universalist Campus Ministry (UUCM) Groups grow strong from the interpersonal connections that are made. Often you won't see everyone who is interested in your group all the time. Some may have scheduling conflicts, others may be new and shy about getting more involved. Making a personal phone call to interested and active students will really bring your UUCM Group to a stronger level. Check out the Phone Banking tips in the Outreach section. You are encouraged to ask for help from your local congregation in making these calls. Talk to your minister, pastoral care committee, director of religious education about it. At worst they will say 'no' but be informed of your grassroots organizing! At best they'll help pick up some of the workload or recruit someone to assist you.
