Ministerial Fellowship

The Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) is a board appointed committee that has jurisdiction over all phases of credentialing and fellowshipping of Unitarian Universalist ministers including:
  • Ministerial credentialing of candidates for ministry.
  • Monitoring the progress of ministers in Preliminary Fellowship.
  • Presiding over cases involving ministerial misconduct.

The MFC Establishes the requirements for fellowship and these rules are voted by the UUA Board of Trustees.

Ministerial Credentialing

Ministerial Fellowship is granted by the Association to those who meet and maintain the high standards and requirements for Unitarian Universalist Ministry. The MFC grants fellowship and governs the rules and policies which apply. Information about preparation and Ministerial Fellowship may be obtained from Ministerial Credentialing website.

Preliminary Fellowship

The MFC requires that all ministers go through a probationary period before receiving Final Fellowship. This is typically a three to nine year process involving the submission of evaluations for renewal of fellowship. More information can be obtained from the Preliminary Fellowship section of this website.

Ministerial Misconduct

Disciplinary Reviews: are handled by the MFC. Ethical or conduct complaints not resolved directly within the congregation or with the assistance of the District Executive may be addressed to the MFC. The Director of Congregational Services advises complainants of appropriate steps and resources. A brief summary of Complaint Procedures is available upon request.

Ministerial Misconduct: Field Staff and Districts provide the primary consultation and support for congregations and their leadership. Contact your district office. The MFC is charged with significant ethical or conduct concerns with could lead to disciplinary action. A complainant or a member of Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Field Staff may address concerns about misconduct to the Director for Congregational Services, safecongregations @ uua.org. Field Staff / Districts have resources and information available, and also provide consultation. In many instances complaints can be resolved directly with a minister, within congregational structures, or with assistance from Field Staff.
