Resources for Church History
August 15, 2005
Q. Our congregation has an anniversary coming up and we’d like to do some historical research before then, but we’re not sure where to start in researching our congregation and its ministers.
A. The Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA’s) Office of Information and Public Witness recommends the following: After you’ve exhausted your local congregational files and historical sources and asked members for information, contact her at the UUA. The UUA has files with historical information on many congregations. What’s in the files depends on how much interaction there was between the congregation and the UUA and its predecessor groups, but the files could include photos, newspaper articles, and denominational correspondence.
Another source is the Unitarian Universalist Historical Society website. A third source is the Andover Harvard Theological Library, where Unitarian, Universalist, and UU archives are kept. It has files dating back more than 200 years. Contact Frances O’Donnell by email (frances_odonnell @ harvard.edu). The mailing address is 45 Francis Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138.
