Why Do GROUNDWORK as UUs?
We, as Unitarian Universalists (UUs), are called to fight for justice and equity in our world through our principles and our ancestors who came before us.
We have a North American culture, in which Western European culture is the norm and standard, and from which anything else is perceived as deviant. Within this context, Unitarian Universalism was created and has flourished.
Therefore, it is reasonable to turn a sharp and critical lens on our history and practice, to reveal in what ways our faith continues to perpetuate destructive power and privilege. Our liberal religious faith calls for wholeness and justice in our life, and anti-racism transformation is at the heart of building healthy relationships, between humanity, creation and the sacred universe.
Our anti-racism ministry is grounded in the 1997 Journey Towards Wholeness resolution of the Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly. As a path to racial and cultural diversity, we believe it is imperative to develop our own individual and institutional anti-racist identity, in partnership with strategies that welcome and receive People of Color. Through the GROUNDWORK training and organizing program we seek to transform our world into an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and multi-cultural community.
GROUNDWORK is a Unitarian Universalist youth and young adult anti-racism training program, authorized by the Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU), the Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network (C*UUYAN) and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA). The GROUNDWORK training and education program was created and developed in partnership with a number of community and faith-based organizations. Please see our website for a complete list of partners.
