Chapter 12: Passing the Flame

As you try to keep track of the details of conference planning, remember another aspect of conference planning. Who will be planning the next conference in your area? Who will be planning conferences in a year or two? Too often, districts and clusters suffer from severe lapses in leadership as the older leaders graduate from high school or move away. People who have done a great job of running the show vanish without a trace, leaving memories of great conferences but no one confident in her or his ability to plan and lead them.

Even if this is your first conference planning experience, you should make leadership roles accessible to others. Introduce younger people to leadership roles in which they are sure to be successful. For example, a younger person who is outgoing might help emcee a coffeehouse or talent show. Be encouraging, but not pushy.
