Grow in Depth, Grow in Commitment: Register NOW for UU University 2008!
"I've been to UU University twice and I think it is the best value you can get out of General Assembly or any place else. If you're really trying to promote leadership in your congregation—real knowledge—you can't find a better format!"
—a Unitarian Universalist lay leader
In June 2006, over 400 congregational leaders gathered in St. Louis before General Assembly to increase their knowledge and capacity to serve their congregations. This first "graduating class" of UU University (UUU) was so enthusiastic about what they'd learned and shared that UU University—originally imagined as a biennial event—convened again in 2007 in Portland, Oregon.
Unitarian Universalist Association Moderator Gini Courter, who helped develop UU University, remembers that "the idea came from more than three hundred congregational presidents who met with Bill Sinkford and me at our General Assembly in Long Beach, California (2004). The presidents asked for world-class professional development for congregational leaders, and that's exactly what UU University provides."
UUU 2008 will feature a keynote address by Nick Carter, President of Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts, focusing on "Ministry in the Borderlands." What, he asks, are the borderlands of difference that naturally occur in a context of diversity: How can we, through deeper understanding of ourselves, our congregations, and our surrounding communities, better understand the unique challenges of diversity that may challenge our leadership and the health and vitality of our congregations?
Registration for UU University is separate from General Assembly (GA) registration. The UU University registration fee of $125 covers admittance to all UUU events, one breakfast and one lunch, as well as all program materials. Lodging is not included. Please use the GA registration form to register for UU University by June 13.
Think about what your attendance at this exceptional leadership conference can do for your congregation—and for you as a leader—and register now. One recent participant said, "To be able to take back what I have learned, to be able to share it within my congregation [and] also work with the new friends I've made [helps me] realize I'm not alone."
Gini Courter adds, "Whether you're a new congregational leader or an experienced leader seeking broader perspectives and a deeper spirituality to ground and sustain your leadership, I hope to see you at UU University in Ft. Lauderdale."
Grow in depth, grow in commitment to our faith. Don't wait—register by June 13 for UU University!
