Transgender Day of Remembrance
Transgender Day of Remembrance is held on November 28th to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998, spurred a series of vigils in her honor the next year which then became Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Not everyone recognized on Transgender Day of Remembrance identified as transgender but their deaths were linked to anti-transgender hatred and bias.
Transgender Day of Remembrance helps to raise awareness of hate crimes committed against transgendered people and publicly mourns and honors the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. It is a day that allows us to stand up collectively in opposition to transgender hatred and prejudice.
