Torda at 450
In the local context of continuing debates around marriage equality, 'freedom of religion' is being used as a catch-cry to permit ongoing discrimination against same sex and transgender couples. Commercial enterprises or celebrants may be allowed claim that obeying new marriage equality legislation violates their right to freedom of religion. Our celebration of the Edict of Torda on January 14th will make clear to our congregation, to our podcast audience, and to local media that for Unitarians, freedom of religion does not mean freedom to discriminate, and that we and our ANZUUA partner churches will be active in advocating that equality for all before the law is a highest social good.
