Gender Equity in an Intersecting World
UU Envoy Erica Merchant led the service titled Gender Equity in an Intersecting World. The Gender Unicorn infographic was printed and included in the order of service. It definitely ignited conversation. We drew on the UUUNO Sunday Service packet and were able to draw on readings and a meditation from gender diverse individuals. We lit our chalice to the words of Sunshine Jeremiah Wolfe, which remind us we are a congregation that gathers in faith. We sat in a Meditation on Opposites by Zir. Alex Kapitan.
The Sermon was complied and curated by Erica Merchant, one of the UN Envoys in our congregation. Erica began by looking at the initatives that the UN and the UUUNO office have been working on for gender equality across the world. In her powerpoint, she was able to review many of the new terms for the expression of gender or sexual orientation that people find confusing as well as pronoun use. She also cleared up common myths around romantic and sexual love and how they overlap - and how they don't. Finally, she discussed how UUs can do better in welcoming people in all of their many forms.
The community received the sermon very well. Many people remarked that they had learned something or that they were considering things from a new perspective. Moving forward, we are reviewing the Welcoming congregation requirements. We have also found a number of new books to share for story for all ages and activities for RE to help support our young people.
