A Note From Unitarian Universalist Association President Bill Sinkford

Dear Friends;

It is with sadness and genuine frustration that I ask you once again to support our efforts to bring peace and justice to Sudan. The violence in Darfur has persisted for far too long, and we must put an end to it once and for all.

In 2004 the world community became aware of great atrocities against the people of Darfur, thanks in large part to nonprofit organizations who organized on their behalf. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) was a founding member of the Save Darfur Coalition, and I committed myself to witnessing for Darfur. In the summer of 2004 I was arrested during a peaceful protest at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC, and the following year I visited refugee camps in Chad along with colleagues from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). We came face-to-face with suffering; and courage; beyond all imagining.

We felt called to speak out, to shine the light of truth into a region overshadowed by the worst form of government oppression. For nearly five years now we’ve been telling the truth about Darfur, and there is no longer any doubt that rape, murder, and ethnic cleansing are being fueled by hatred and facilitated by a corrupt regime. Former President George W. Bush even identified this catastrophe by its true name—genocide. Neither innocence nor ignorance can excuse us from acting, but despite the outcries from the United Nations and much of the world community, the killing continues. We must do more.

This tragedy has long been close to my heart, and I pray that the world community will finally come together to save an endangered people. Please join with me to help bring justice and healing to Darfur.

In faith,
Bill Sinkford

Postcards to President Obama

During his Presidential Campaign, President Obama made very strong statements concerning the future of Darfur in Sudan. He said the United States must have "unstinting resolve" to solve the crisis there. So far, we have seen no movement on his part to act.

The UUA, a member of the Save Darfur Coalition, is asking you to send a postcard to President Obama to help end the violence in Darfur.

We ask President Obama for:

  • Protection of civilians from violence, starvation and disease
  • Sustainable peace for all Sudan
  • Justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators

You can send your postcard electronically and request hard copies for your congregation by visiting the Darfur Action Page.
