Welcome to New Lay Leaders

October 1, 2010

If you’re a new member of your congregation’s governing board, welcome to InterConnections, the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA’s) free online newsletter for lay and professional leaders of all our congregations.

For 13 years InterConnections has been creating and publishing articles designed to meet the practical needs of congregational leaders. InterConnections searches out congregations that have had extraordinary success with particular issues and tells you how they did it and what other resources are available on that topic.

Whatever issue you’re struggling with, chances are we’ve written about it––from being more welcoming to how to talk about money to how to develop a caring committee.

Hundreds of these past articles—plus new ones every month—are available to you. For starters, at the top of that page please sign up all of your board members and any other key volunteers and staff who you’d like to receive InterConnections.

You’ll receive one email a month from InterConnections. It comes on the 15th and it lists all of the new articles for that month. You can read them on the screen, print them out, or easily email them to others. Timely announcements and other brief articles appear each week on our blog, InterConnections Tipsheet.

To search for an article, click on the Archives or the Search button on the left side of the page and put in whatever issue you’re interested in. If you don’t find what you need, contact us at interconnections @ uua.org and we’ll try to locate it for you.

We also invite you to follow InterConnection on Facebook.

And remember that InterConnections is not the only place to find information that will be useful to you as a congregational leader. Here are four others:

UUA.org: The Unitarian Universalist Association’s website is where you can go to search out religious education curricula, stewardship resources, and learn about UUA programs like Association Sunday and Standing on the Side of Love. At the bottom of the front page of UUA.org is a list of helpful “Most Viewed” links to various parts of the site. We especially recommend WorshipWeb, a collection of worship-related resources. Social Media explores new technologies and has a list of UUA staff blogs and email lists.

Email lists: There are more than 75 UUA-sponsored email lists available to congregational leaders. If you need an answer to a question about a congregational issue and can’t find it in InterConnections, put it onto UU-Leaders and you’ll soon have replies from other leaders who have dealt with the same issue. There is also a list for questions about membership issues (Memb-l) and one for financial concerns (UU-Money). You can also use these lists to ask other leaders for their congregations’ written policies on topics like safe congregations, personnel, and communications, so that you don’t have to “reinvent the wheel” every time you need something.

Sign up for these lists here. If you’re worried about getting too much email, click on the box that allows you to get them in DIGEST form. You’ll still get all the emails, but they’ll come grouped once a day or every few days rather than individually.

UUWorld.org: The online edition of UU World magazine publishes new articles each Monday, focusing on what congregations, individual UUs, and the UUA are doing in areas from social justice to denominational affairs.

District Staff: The UUA’s 19 districts have staff who work with congregations on many issues, including leadership development. Districts offer workshops, many of them now available online, to lay leaders.

Again, welcome, as you take up your new responsibilities. InterConnections and the rest of the UUA staff are here to help you find the information you need.

For more information contact interconnections @ uua.org.

This work is made possible by the generosity of individual donors and congregations. Please consider making a donation today.
