Immigration Suggested Actions

What You Can Do With This Toolkit

  1. Complete Our Online Action on Immigration
You can either send the provided email as is, or customize your own message based on the Talking Points.

  2. Call Your Legislator(s)
Find your Senators and/or Representative using Congress.org. This site will also provide you with their contact information. Consult the Tips on Calling Your Legislator. Use the Immigration Call Script provided or compose your own message based on the Talking Points.

  3. Write Your Legislator(s)
Find your Senators and/or Representative using Congress.org. This site will also provide you with their contact information. Consult the Tips on Writing Your Legislator. Use the Immigration Sample Letter provided, or compose your own message based on the Talking Points.

  4. Visit Your Legislator(s)
Find your Senators and/or Representative using Congress.org. This site will also provide you with their contact information. Consult the Tips on Organizing a Visit to Your Legislator to set up a visit. Refer to the Talking Points to give your message. Bring a copy of the "One Pager" in order to leave behind with your legislator or legislative staff person for reference.

  5. Organizing a Letter Writing Campaign in Your Congregation
Find the Senators and/or Representatives who represent the members of your congregation using Congress.org. This site will also provide you with their contact information. Consult the Tips on Hosting a Letter-Writing Table. Bring copies of the Immigration Sample Letter to which people can refer. Also bring a Sign-up Sheet to help you build your list of people interested in immigration (and fax a copy to the Unitarian Universalist Association Washington Office! (fax) (202) 393-5494).

Also, don't forget the kids! Bring crayons and colored markers and ask them to draw pictures of families together. After all, one of the main goals of immigration reform is to keep families together!

After the Letter Writing Campaign, deliver the letters to your legislator via a lobby visit (see D.)

  6. Hold a Worship Service around Immigration Reform
See the Worship Materials for suggestions. In conjunction with the worship service, urge congregants to take action, either by calling their legislators (using the handy Call Script Flyer that you’ve inserted into the order of service) or by stopping by the Letter Writing table after service (see E.).

Take lots of pictures and let us know how it went!
