Radio and Podcast Media
Radio can be used in various ways by Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations, including for advertising, public service announcements (PSAs), and radio programs. If paying for radio time is beyond the budget of your congregation, you might consider creating podcasts instead. These can be posted on the internet and publicized to reach your audience. Podcasts could be the podcast of a worship service or a special event at church, or they can be specially created programs as you would hear on radio. First Unitarian Church of Rochester, NY, produces a podcast program called LifeNow!, which has also been broadcast on the radio. It is one of their ministries and is an outreach tool for the congregation.
Radio advertising's strength is in its frequency. The message is heard many times at a reasonable cost per thousand listeners (CPM). Your radio spots will need to be engaging in order to cut through the noise of the programming. Many Unitarian Universalist congregations have sponsored programs, using public service announcements (PSAs), on their local public radio station. In fact, some congregations pool their members' donations to public radio and then buy PSAs for their congregation—a great idea!
Congregations can produce their own radio spots, but this can be costly. However, some congregations have created some great spots! These three radio ads, below, produced for the UU Church of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, CA, are good examples.
