Gift of the Week – April 1, 2009
Who Gave It: Anonymous
Who Got It: Friends of the UUA
How Much: $10.00
How it Happened: Friends of the UUA recently received a gift of $10 attached to the following letter in response to the Stand on the Side of Love appeal:
Dear UUA,
Although we have recently had to cut back on all non-essential expenses, we absolutely had to send the UUA a donation to thank you for this letter.
First, I was taken aback to see that this appeal was centered around marriage equality. I hadn’t expected it – and was completely floored by it.
Second, I was thrilled to see bisexuals listed, much less listed first. Both my wife and I are bi, and far too often we are excluded by language and rendered invisible. As a same sex couple that has had three weddings now, we’ve been particularly pained when left out of the moments of celebration, even as we’re forced to share the devastation of the setbacks.
Finally, the simple acknowledgement that bi and trans inclusion is a more recent development at the UUA than lesbian/gay demonstrates an openness and honesty that makes me truly proud. I am not sure you realize how rare such and acknowledgement is.
We plan to share this letter with our bi friends (and others) as an example of how easy it can be to be inclusive. And more importantly, that it also works in raising money.
This work is made possible by the generosity of individual donors. Please consider making a donation today.
