Unitarian Universalist Church, Brockton, MA
In June 2008, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brockton received two large, unexpected bills for old oil tank removal and the stage two clean up of oil leakage over the last 20 years. The congregation paid these bills—totaling more than $12,000—on a priority that the environmental damage had to be corrected and that the contractor came first.
This payment left the church with an approximate $1,500 shortfall in Annual Program Fund (APF) Fair Share and a $900 shortfall in the Ballou Channing District (BCD) Fair Share. Bob Thayer, the district’s APF representative, made an impassioned plea to the Board to make up the shortfalls.
The Board listened and discussed how to fulfill these commitments. They voted to launch a per-member campaign to raise $56 from each member and include the BCD Fair Share as well. The Board members kicked off the campaign by pledging to make the first donations. Bob Thayer contributed $300 of his own funds, and another person matched his contribution amount.
Over two and a half weeks, one woman made 73 phone solicitations and collected more than $3,000 in contributions by mail and hand delivery. The congregation far exceeded the goal set by the Board, and the overage was placed in the column for Fiscal Year 2009 APF.
This work is made possible by the generosity of individual donors and congregations. Please consider making a donation today.
