Amy S. Waye
Gift of the Week—August 15, 2007Who Gave It: Amy S. Waye, 1907-2007
How much: $2,000
Who Got It: Association Sunday for Growth in Numbers
How It Happened: Amy S. Waye, who passed away this year at age 99, had a lifelong love of learning. With her hunger for knowledge, she was the first person in her family to go to college though faced with extreme financial difficulty. Despite all the obstacles she went on to become an English teacher. A devoted wife and mother, Amy’s two daughters grew up knowing they would pursue higher education with the support of their parents.
Religious education was at the core of Amy’s activity in four congregations: Melrose, Massachusetts; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Dayton, Ohio; and First Parish UU in Needham. At the Needham congregation, she was very involved with the Religious Education program. She gave them her time, her talent, and gifts of RE materials, books, and a bookcase to store this valuable knowledge.
Amy was very interested in both the history and future of religion, and felt strongly that her bequest gift be used for educational and outreach programs. Her gift will help in growing Unitarian Universalism in spirit, influence and numbers, ensuring the future of our religious faith.
Amy S. Waye found a spiritual home in our religious faith. Her hope was that others who are searching will too find their spiritual home in one of our many congregations.
