UUA India Flood Relief Fund

We pray today for our brothers and sisters in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand who are struggling to recover from the devastating floods that began ten days ago. The unprecedented deluge there has left at least 1,000 dead and tens of thousands homeless. Officials expect the death toll to escalate sharply as they assess the full impact of the tsunami-like torrent that rushed down the Ganges and other rivers of the region. A towering stretch of the Himalayas cuts through this state, drawing countless pilgrims each summer. Many were swept away or left stranded after the flooding. They now struggle alongside local residents to survive hunger, thirst, and continuing rain as the Indian Air Force valiantly attempts to rescue survivors. The recovery after this calamity will take years and require rebuilding homes, hospitals, schools, roads, and other critical infrastructure.

One of the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA’s) close partners in India, the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), is committed to supporting a fair and just recovery for all of Uttarakhand’s residents. AIDMI has been at the forefront of ensuring that disaster relief and rehabilitation in India be equitable in who it reaches, emphasize environmentally sustainable building practices, and deeply involve the affected communities in planning and execution. These strategies will be critical in the rebuilding of Uttarakhand.

If you feel moved to support this vital approach to disaster recovery in India, please make a contribution online to the UUA's Holdeen India Program or send a check made out to "Unitarian Universalist Association" with "India Flood Relief" in the memo line to:
