President's Freedom to Marry Fund Grant Guidelines

Applying for grant from the President’s Freedom to Marry Fund is relatively easy. The following steps are listed to help you apply for a grant:
  1. Grant applications may be submitted by mail, fax or email.
  2. Grants are given to congregations or Unitarian Universalist IUU) groups serving congregations doing social justice work toward marriage equality. They are not given to individuals or groups outside of Unitarian Universalism.
  3. The grant proposal should include:
    • The name of the congregation(s)/UU Group.
    • The amount of the grant request.
    • The purpose of the grant request (what the moneywill beused for and why).
    • A report back of how the grant was used--preferably onepage with accompanying examples and/or pictures that illustrate this. (If you are applying for the fund again, a report must have been filed on the previous usage of the grant, for the new proposal to merit consideration).
    • Corroboration from either the board chair or minister that the congregation is in support of the grant request.
    • Contact information for one person to be asked questions about the grant.

The grant request has no length or style requirements, though err on the side of just enough information and not too much.

Typical grants are mainly for less than $1,000. Grants under this amount will be determined for approval by the Director of the Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Concerns. Grants of more than $1,000 will be determined for approval by a 3-person committee of UUA staff. Checks will be issued within 2 weeks, if not sooner, of approval. Grant requests are more likely to be given for upcoming events as opposed to events that have already happened.
