Green Construction Award Pilot Program

A Green Construction Award Pilot Program is being launched by the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. The program is designed to stimulate the growth of Unitarian Universalism by encouraging congregations to design, construct or renovate, and operate green facilities. An award will be given to those congregations who seek and receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. LEED is a program administered by the United States Green Building Council. The award will help congregations defray part of the cost of  the LEED certification process.

LEED is the nationally accepted benchmark for green construction. The program utilizes a green building point rating system. LEED provides congregations with a process to help plan, design, and construct a new (or renovate an existing) building that produces a measurable environmental impact. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Visit the LEED website for complete information.

Award Specifics

The program will be launched on Earth Day, April 21, 2007.

Awards will be given to the first six congregations submitting a request and LEED certification. No award requests will be accepted before April 21, 2007.

The following awards are being offered:
  • Gold/Platinum Certification: $10,000
  • Silver Certification: $7,500
  • Standard Certification: $5,000

Each applicant must be a Fair Share congregation for three years prior to submitting their certification and request for an award.

The program will be reviewed with the possibility of extending it or making it a permanent fixture.
