How General Assembly Events Are Selected
Programmed Events
Programmed events are official programs that are listed in the General Assembly (GA) printed program book and open to all GA registrants. Registration is required for attendance. Examples of programmed events include workshops, worship services, hearings, lectures, panel presentations and performances.
Proposing a program for General Assembly
The Program Development Group (PDG) is a diverse team of Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) staff and members of the GA Planning Committee. For GA 2012, a Justice GA, the PDG will also include representatives from the Arizona Immigration Ministry (AZIM) and the GA 2012 Accountability Group.
The Program Development Group is charged with identifying excellent General Assembly programming – education and preparation that will build the capacity of Unitarian Universalists to stand in opposition to systemic racism and to witness on immigration, racial and economic justice. The PDG will review all submitted proposals and will select approximately 100 proposed events for inclusion on the General Assembly schedule.
To merit consideration, proposals submitted for the 2012 GA needed to be related to the issues of migration and borders, and/or racial and economic justice. Workshops and other events that serve to educate and prepare attendees to publicly witness and to perform service, both in Arizona and at home, were especially sought. Proposers were required to assume the participation of people of all abilities and of all generations in all General Assembly activities. All proposals were due by the extended deadline November 30.
Private Events
Private events are invitation-only and are not listed in the GA program book. GA registration is not required for attendance. Examples of private meetings include business meetings, food functions, receptions, pre/post GA meetings (usually business or conference) of organizations for their own agendas. Requests for private events must come from an authorized sponsoring organization. Space is assigned based on availability.
The use of UUA contracted meeting space designated for private events may only be reserved by authorized sponsoring organizations: UUA staff, UUA elected committees, Board appointed committees, Associate Member Organizations (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation), and UUA Related Organizations listed as either Professional Organizations or Theological Schools.
Other UUA Related Organizations may request the use of UUA contracted meeting space for a private meeting of their organization. Requests may be made by email to the GA Planning Committee in care of meetingplanner@uua.org. Requests were due by December 15th. The GA Planning Committee will review requests at their January meeting.
