GA Awards Ceremony Honors distinguished work, growth, preaching

(Québec City, QUE - June 23, 2002) At 7:30 AM on June 23rd, sleepy-eyed attendees at the UUA General Assembly filed into a ballroom at the Centre des Congres to enjoy a hearty breakfast and applaud 2002 Award honorees.
Dr. Norma Poinsett, Trustee-at-Large and a favorite with GA delegates, acted as emcee for the event, which was also attended by UUA Moderator Diane Olson and aprox. 500 GA attendees. The awards which were presented honored work in religious education, preaching, social action, congregational growth, international outreach, and work with or on behalf of, youth and young adults.

The Angus H. MacLean Award, presented in honor of the former dean and teacher of religious education at St. Lawrence University Theological School, was given to Pat Ellenwood, Director of Religious Education at the Unitarian Universalist Society at Wellesley Hills, MA, and was presented by St. Lawrence alumnus Norman Naylor and Judith Frediani, Acting Director of Religious Education at the UUA. Ellenwood has also served as President of LREDA, the Liberal Religious Educators Association, for the last two years.

The Annual Program Fund/UU Ministers Association Sermon Award, for the sermon which most effectively explores and promotes financial support of UUism and the issue of money as it relates to affirm our UU faith, was given to the Rev. Dr. Gary Blaine, minister of the First Unitarian Church of Toledo, OH. The award was jointly presented by Joan Lund, Vice Chair of the Annual Program Fund, and the Rev. Craig Roshaven, a member of the UU Ministers Association Executive Board. Read the sermon by Rev. Blaine.

The Bennett Award for Congregational Action honors the congregation that has done exemplary work in social justice. It was presented by Meg Riley, director of the UUA’s Washington Office, to the UU Congregation of Atlanta, GA, and was accepted by their senior minister, the Rev. Dr. Edward Frost.

The Cornish "Living the Mission" Award, in honor of Louis C. Cornish, former president of the AUA, presented by the Partner Church Council for distinguished contributions to global partnerships, was given to the Rev. Richard Beal and presented by the Rev. David Keyes.

The International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF) US Chapter Award is given to the individual who has contributed the most to advancing the work of the IARF. It was presented to the Rev. Peter Tufts Richardson, former minister, Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Andover, MA, by Natalie Gulbrandsen and Doris Hunter.

The Mark DeWolfe Award is given to a UU minister by Interweave: UUs for GLBT Concerns, for long term contributions to the spiritual, political, and social well being of UUs confronting oppression as b/g/l/t individuals. The presenter was the Rev. Jane Dwinell, and the recipient was Stan Calder.

The O. Eugene Pickett Award is presented to the congregation that has made an outstanding contribution to the growth of UUism. The Recipient was All Souls UU Church in Kansas City, MO. The Award was accepted by their senior minister, the Rev. Jim Eller, and was presented by the Rev. Dr. Tracey Robinson-Harris, acting director of the UUA department of congregational, district and extension services.

The Schweitzer Award is given by UUs for Ethical Treatment of Animals, for the sermon that best exemplifies Schweitzer’s teaching of ‘reverence for life.’ The recipient was the Rev. Len DeRoche; the presenter was LoraKim Joyner.

The Skinner Sermon Award is given for stimulating meritorious preaching about the social implications of religion. The recipient was the Rev. Edmund Robinson, minister of the Unitarian Church of Wakefield, MA; the award was presented by Emily Dulcan, intern in the UUA Washington Office.

Social Action Leadership Award presented to Leslie Weinberg |
The Social Action Leadership Award honors creative, inspiring and effective leadership by an individual or group working for justice with the UU Service Committee. The Recipient was Leslie Weinberg, presented by a member of the UUSC Board.

Maggie Pipes & Rev. Tracey Robinson-Harris

The Unsung UU Award honors a person judged to have given high levels of service to UUism, while receiving relatively low levels of recognition. This year’s winner was Maggie Pipes, and the award was presented by the Rev. Dr. Tracey Robinson-Harris.

The Unsung UU Youth Award honors a youth age 14-20 who has served UU values through witness to and for our faith. The winner was Hannah Peterson, and the award was presented by the Rev. Dr. Tracey Robinson-Harris.

The Donna DiSciullo Award for Young Adult/Campus Ministry is presented to an individual or organization that has furthered the cause of active ministry to young adults. It was presented by Michael Tino, director of the UUA Young Adult/Campus Ministries Office, to Amy Strano.

Awards for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Unitarian Univiersalism, presented in 2002 to Natalie Gulbrandsen, and the President’s Award for Volunteer Service to the UUA, presented to Jan and Stu Sendell, were awarded separately during Plenary sessions.
