CENTER DAY 2002 Wednesday, June 19

Session A Workshops: 1-2:30 p.m.

A1) CONTINUE IDENTITY-BASED CONFLICT WORK WITH JAY ROTHMAN AND RANDI LAND

A6) HONORING THE SPIRITUAL LIVES OF CHILDREN (LREDA) The religious community can strengthen, deepen and clarify children's spirituality. We must also take seriously our charge to be a caring community and work with parents to be clear and effective models and teachers for their children. Facilitated by the Rev. Jeanne Nieuwejaar, an interim co-minister with her husband Olav at the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock, is a lifelong Universalist and Unitarian Universalist and author of the Skinner House book, The Gift of Faith.

A7) MINISTRY IN THE NEW CUC In this panel discussion Canadian and U.S. ministers and students serving in Canada will share thoughts on their common differing experiences with the Canadian context. We'll also take a brief look at how the new CUC-UUA agreement will touch the lives of ministers.

A8) REVEREND MOTHERS One of the most compelling challenges in clergywomen's lives is the balance of ministry and motherhood. Are you a minister by any definition? Are you a mother by any definition? Please join this annual, lively conversation among clergy moms for support, advise, insights, networking, and a renewed sense of the absurd and wonderful in our lives. Facilitator: Rev. Sarah Lammert, parish minister, Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden, Utah.

A9) STANDING TOGETHER. An opportunity for all religious professionals to learn about the new credentialing program for religious educators. Will explain the process, content and timeline for the implementation of the new professional standards developed by the UUA and LREDA. Facilitated by the Rev. Michelle Favreault, Pat Ellenwood, and the Rev. Makanah E. Morriss

A10) PASTORAL VISITATION: For ministers who want to begin a pastoral visitation program in their congregation AND/OR who want to gain confidence in ministering to the sick and dying. Facilitated by Florence Gelo, D. Min, Minister, Thomas Paine UU Fellowship, Collegeville, PA.
Assistant Professor, MCP Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA

A11) MINISTRY TO, BY, AND FOR CHRISTIANS: WHAT'S WORKING IN OUR CONGREGATIONS? Most UU congregations include some Christians. Some UU congregations are served by ministers who identify partially or fully as UU Christians. This workshop answers the question, How is our Liberal Christian heritage enriching congregational life in the 21st century? Facilitated by David Keyes and Melanie Morel Sullivan

A12) LEADERSHIP IN FAMILY/CHURCH SYSTEMS Understanding how to lead in our families and congregations from the Rev. Kenn Hurto

A13) INVITING GRACE: MINISTRY AS AN OPENING TO THE HOLY
There are ways of doing ministry that increase our chances of discerning
God's will and moving closer to the "love that moves the sun and the other Stars." Too often, however, our ministry can lead us in the direction of delusion and isolation. Facilitated by the Rev. Barbara Merritt

A14-B14) UUMPS: Unitarian Universalist Ministers Partners meet informally and share concerns. Facilitated by Mark Gibbons

A15) MENTORING UU MINISTERS: An opportunity to hone your skills as a potential mentor to new UU Ministers or to more fully understand the need for a mentor. Facilitated by the Rev. Roberta Finkelstein and the Rev. Dr. Gretchen Woods.

A16) GOOD OFFICES TRAINING for chapter leaders with the Rev. Ruppert Lovely

Session B Workshops: 2:45-4:15 p.m.

B1) DEPRESSION IN THE MINISTRY Ministry is often a lonely business. Especially during times of turmoil or challenge in a church, isolation often causes ministers to be especially susceptible to situational depression. This workshop will present a case study and suggest ways ministers can deal with depression productively and creatively. Facilitated by the Rev. Kenn Hurto and the Rev. Leslie Westbrook.

B2) WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A "TEACHING CONGREGATION." Come discuss the relationship between the intern and the supervising minister, the intern committee, and the whole of the congregation. Facilitated by the Rev. David Sammons, Mt. Diablo UU Church in Walnut Creek, CA, and Patti Lawrence, Dean of Students and Congregational Outreach at Starr King School for the Ministry and director of the parish intern program at the School.

B3) WORKING THINGS OUT (OR NOT) WITH YOUR PREDECESSOR. Will focus on what factors make transitions between ministers successful and what factors can hinder those transitions. Facilitated by the Rev. John Nichols

B4) TEAM MINISTRY: How can multiple staff ministries become more effective. Facilitated by the Rev. Michael MaGee, the Rev. Joan Gelbein of the Unitarian Church of Arlington, VA.

B5) CHANGES IN THE WIND: MFC AND UUMA RESPONSE TO SPECIALTIES: The MFC and the UUMA are creating a new process for the final credentialing of our ministers. The UUMA has established a task force to discern the standards of competency for a minister to have a designated "specialty." This workshop will review progress to date and solicit colleagues' suggestions for next steps. Facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons and the Rev. Ellen Brandenburg

B6) FOR MINISTER CONSIDERING SEARCH: will describe the search process, report on results over the past several years, and field ministers' questions and concerns. Facilitated by UUA Settlement Director John Weston

B7) TRAUMA RESPONSE FOR MINISTERS: You pick-up your phone, and a member tells you, "There's been a shooting...." Perhaps you witness an act of terrorism in your city, or a violent death inside your own sanctuary on Sunday. In the past few years, UUs have discovered that such traumatic events are not improbable fiction. After the initial shock, survivors often look first to clergy to understand what has happened. Most of us haven't prepared ourselves to respond to such "critical incidents." Colleagues trained to counsel us and our congregations after a critical incident offer models for effective ministry as a crisis response team: Rosemary Bray McNatt, Jan Carlsson-Bull, Kate Seitz Bortner, Danita Noland, Joel Miller, Lisa Presley, Shayna Appel, and Susan Suchocki Brown.

B8) CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IN FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY. YRUU is dedicated to Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression work, which includes getting a clearer understanding of how we may take part in cultural appropriation without knowing it. This workshop will emphasize ways of discussing cultural appropriation with youth in congregations in an empowering way. Facilitated by Jen Devine, UUA Youth Office Director and Paula Nett, YRUU Program Specialist.

B9) NO MORE SUNDAY COLLECTIONS How to make the offering section of the worship service more productive, segueing into a discussion of our congregations' culture around money. Facilitated by the Rev. Ralph Mero of the Department of Ministry.

B10) MINISTER AND MUSICIAN CO-CREATING WORSHIP: How UU ministers and professional musicians can work collaboratively and understand the problems each faces in creating worship with both intellectual stimulation and affective impulse. Facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Gretchen Woods and a representative from the UU Musicians Network.

B11) CENTER REPRESENTATIVE AND CHAPTER PROGRAM TRAINING for chapter leadership facilitated by the Rev. Makanah Morriss and the Rev. Dr. Ian Evison

B12) HAVE SERMON, WILL TRAVEL: An opportunity for colleagues to explore the possibility of short term ministry overseas. Facilitated by the Rev. Polly Guild.

B13) THINKING TOGETHER, NOT ALIKE: This open conversation will bring American and Canadian ministers together to reflect how the two nations respond to social and political issues. Perhaps more importantly we'll also ask how congregations on either side of the border respond. A panel will briefly lead things off, but hopefully the talk will range far and wide.

B14) UUMPS: continued

B15) UURMAPA: An informal opportunity for retired ministers and their partners to gather, discuss and share their lives.

B16) GRANT WRITING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY speaks for itself with Hilary Goodrich.
