Fulfilling the Promise: Our Common Call
2000 UUA General Assembly
421 Creating More Vital Congregations through Intergenerational Programming
Board of Trustees Workshop

Speakers: Drake Baer, Jennifer Chanin, Nato Hollister

"With intentionality and tools, vital inter-generational community can be created in all our congregations." That was the message given to over 80 attendees at this workshop, which turned into an energetic brainstorming session. The speakers provided a list of ideas for intergenerational activities drawn from their own church experience. The audience used that list as a starting point and shared dozens of their own ideas. An important observation was that the vision for what the intergenerational activities should look like in a church must come from both the youth and adults, and that the vision will change from year to year. Many of the suggestions voiced included getting youth more involved in the organization of the church, such as on the church board and religious education committee.

Two workshop attendees, Greg Ward and Bert Christensen, maintain a website rich in intergenerational resource ideas: http://www.uuintergenerational.org. The site includes scripts for several intergenerational Sunday services, such as Earth Day, Christmas Eve, and Easter.
