Statement of Jerry GabertAt the Annual General Meeting of
RAYTHEON CORPORATION
Lexington, MA, April 24, 2002
Resolution: Implement McBride Principles
Mr. Chairman, fellow shareholders, my name is Jerry Gabert, Treasurer of the Unitarian Universalist Association. I am here on behalf of NYC [New York City] Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. and the New York City pension and retirement funds to introduce the resolution calling on our company to implement the MacBride Principles at its facilities in Northern Ireland.
The MacBride Principles, proposed by the Irish Nobel peace laureate, Dr. Sean MacBride, are a set of nine equal opportunity/affirmative action principles designed to promote non-discrimination in employment in Northern Ireland.
Over the last 13 years, 63 major U.S. and Canadian corporations have agreed to implement these principles. Were Raytheon to join with them, on the way to "fulfilling the aspiration to become one of the most admired companies in the world" it would clearly demonstrate its concern for human rights and equality of opportunity in its international operations. I, therefore, move the resolution on Northern Ireland found in our proxy materials.
NOTE: The resolution passed by a margin of 13.1%.
