The Banner Parade

A grand parade of banners from hundreds of Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations and organizations highlights the Opening of General Assembly (GA).  The gathering time and place for banner carriers is announced in the GA Program.  Afterwards, congregational banners are usually hung in the hall where Plenary sessions are held or around the convention center, visually representing that the Unitarian Universalist Association is an association of member congregations.  Unitarian Universalist organizations often hang their banners in their display booths.

Check-in for Wednesday’s Opening Ceremony banner parade will be announced in the General Assembly Program book.  Comfortable shoes are recommended.  Please make arrangements for the security of purses or other valuables, as they may not be left in the staging area.

Because of increasing space and logistical difficulties as the number of banners grows every year, only the banners of congregations and districts will be hung after the Opening Ceremony to contribute to the ambiance of General Assembly. Related organizations are invited to display their banners in their exhibit hall booth or at their group's meetings.

All banners to be hung in the banner display areas must be logged in by GA Ushers before the parade so they can be part of our banner protection system, and all must have the required sleeve at the top.  The banner registration form will ask for the name of the person who is authorized to pick up your church banner.  I.D. will be required for pickup.  Hung banners may not be picked up or removed until banner pick-up hours on Sunday (10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.).  If your church cannot arrange for pick-up at the designated time please do not leave your banner for hanging.
