Green Sanctuary Fiscal Year 2010 1st Quarter Report

Green Sanctuary Program Accomplishments

  1. Renewal and the companion screening guide was shipped to all Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) congregations at the beginning of September. Renewal is a documentary composed of eight stories of various faith communities engaging in environmental work inspired by their faith. We are inviting you to use this resource in whatever way would be most useful for your congregation. Some suggested ways to use the resource are to:
    • Include the film in a regular congregational film series
    • Invite other faith communities to co-sponsor a screening of the film to start an interfaith collation for environmental concerns
    • Choose one of the stories to include in a worship service or as a religious education lesson
    • Use the study guide and complete one of the suggested activities
    • Show the film to get your congregation interested in participating in the Green Sanctuary program.

Your congregation should have received a copy of the DVD; if you did not, first check your congregational mailbox, then email uua_greensanctuary @ uua.org with your correct mailing address.

  2. The newest version of the Green Sanctuary Manual is now available online free-of-charge. The manual is 120 pages—the first half is the actual manual and contains lots of pictures of congregations engaging in Green Sanctuary projects and examples of various projects for each of the four focus areas, the second half is appendixes which contain congregational examples of different parts of the Green Sanctuary applications.

  3. We are in the process of reviewing resources for Green Sanctuaries including green books and films. Currently, you can find reviews of Children’s Books. Check back in the future for films, additional books, and websites.

  4. Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth (UUMFE): International Day of Climate Action—October 24, 2009. UU Ministry for Earth invites Unitarian Universalists to join with us in prayer, meditation, action, and celebration on October 24, 2009, in our collaboration with 350.org in a day of action for climate justice. Groups around the globe will call on the world's leaders to commit to decreasing carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in Earth's atmosphere to below 350 parts per million, the stable and safe upper limit for the world's people, creatures, and future generations. Bill McKibben, co-founder and director of 350.org, has specifically called for UU involvement; watch the 45-second YouTube video.

For more information about the International Day of Climate Action, visit the UUMFE website. They have included ideas for events your congregation can organize, links to our partner organizations, and a registry for our collaboration with 350.org. Let then know what your congregation is planning! Also, please register at 350.org and sign the "Interfaith Call for 350."

  5. The “Environmental Justice Collaborative Newsletter” will be published monthly. Sign up to receive the newsletter in your inbox. It is also available online at UUA.org.
