Obama Administration
The Obama administration has promised more stringent review of mountaintop removal permits, but the current policies go against important environmental laws like the Clean Water Act. It's up to the Obama administration to issue a new rule that prohibits mountaintop removal mining altogether. Join with our partners at the Sierra Club to urge the White House to End Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining.
Senate
The Appalachian Restoration Act (S.696) is a Senate bill that would outlaw the dumping of mining waste into streams and undo the Bush administration's 2002 gutting of the Clean Water Act. In early July 2009, the Senate held its first hearing on mountaintop removal coal mining and S 696. iLoveMountains.org has a handy online tool to help you call your Senators and urge them to support the Appalachian Restoration Act.
House of Representatives
The Clean Water Protection Act (H.R.1310) is a House bill that would define "fill material," thereby closing a loophole and once again prohibit the dumping of mountaintop removal waste into the water systems. Use the online form at iLoveMountains.org to write your representatives and ask them to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R.1310). (This same form will send an email to your Senators in support of S.696 as well.)
Locally
Find out whether your district uses mountaintop removal mined coal, and if so, tell them that you want them to stop. You can do both at iLoveMountains.org.
