UU Fellowship of Falmouth Advocates for Environmental Justice

On the first Sunday in February, the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship of Falmouth in Massachusetts, sets time aside to acknowledge the cold weather. "It's a sacred time of year in some of the Northern cultures," says Rev. Robert Francis Murphy. "Many people talk about Groundhog Day but there's something else that happens in this season. This is the time for Imbolc and Candlemas and for coming to terms with winter."

"Don't hibernate!" is the slogan in this Cape Cod congregation. For the past seven years, Sunday services in January and February have encouraged people to help their neighbors during a difficult season. The fellowship works with community groups and with other religious organizations to educate people about fuel assistance and opportunities for home energy conservation. Special attention is given to the needs of low-income families. More >

UU Church of Tallahassee Moves Forward with Solar Power Project

On December 3, 2006, members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee (UUCT) approved action to apply for a bridge loan from the City of Tallahassee to help fund its Solar Power Project. The vote brings the church one step closer to the use of alternative energy.

The project, also supported by the generous voluntary contributions of forty-five UUCT members, will provide an alternative source of electricity for the church through the installation of a system of solar (photovoltaic) panels on the south roof of the church's education building. The plan is based on a 10-kilowatt system. Electricity not used by the church will be fed to the city power grid for which UUCT will receive retail price benefits. More >
