Unitarian Universalist History and Heritage Society, Inc.
The Unitarian Universalist Historical Society (UUHS) and the Unitarian Universalist Women's Heritage Society (UUWHS) merged in 2011 to form the UUHHS.
The UUHS was formed in 1978 as a result of the merger of the Unitarian (1901) and Universalist Historical Societies (1834). The UUWHS was organized in 1988 when study of the role of women in history was a neglected field in need of special emphasis. This latest merger brings together two organizations that promote both scholarly and lay interest in the history of liberal religion. The society encourages the work of historical research, preservation, documentation, and writing by local congregations and professionals, and programs and publications to engage Unitarian Universalists and others who are interested in the history and heritage of this historic faith and its predecessors. The society publishes the Journal of Unitarian Universalist History, and a newsletter, and often sponsors programs at General Assembly, Convocations and elsewhere. The library of the Harvard Divinity School, 45 Francis Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138, continues as a repository for official documents relating to liberal religious history.
