Star Island Retreat Center off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire

The historic Oceanic Hotel on Star Island is home to UU conferences during the summer.

Star Island is located off the coast of New Hampshire and is the second largest of the nine islands that make up the Isles of Shoals. Its historic Oceanic Hotel and adjacent buildings become the village home for thousands of visitors each summer. The island is staffed by a group of employees affectionately called Pelicans who live and work in community, living out UU values. The nonprofit Star Island Corporation has owned and operated Star Island since 1915. From June through September, guests come for a day, an overnight visit, or to attend one of the many conferences presented each summer on a range of topics such as international affairs, religious education, natural history, writing, photography, music, painting, ecology, yoga, matters of the spirit, and more. Star Island’s historic connections to Unitarian Universalism and the United Church of Christ result in a liberal spiritual quality that is renewing and uplifting.
