Paz y Armonia (Peace and Harmony)

There is an emerging fellowship in Argentina that has flourished as a result of contact with Unitarian Universalists (UU). This group is located at the southernmost point of South America, on an island called Tierra del Fuego, or "Land of Fire." Although Argentina is known as being a traditional Christian country, many Argentineans are looking for an alternative answer for their spiritual needs. In 2002, Dr. Lilian Burlando founded the Center for Study and Meditation (Centro de Estudio y Meditacion) in Ushuaia where worship, meditation and other activities take place. The fellowship meets twice a month, the second and last Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. to noon and the first Wednesday of each month from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Besides worship meetings (here called meditation) the Center promotes other activities such as frequent open meetings for people going through the bereavement process. Also workshops focusing on topics such as "Love and Sexuality," "Analyzing Our Own Values and Beliefs," "Simple Living," "Burnout," and "World's Religions." The Center offers a place for people interested in the study of philosophy, theology, and psychology. UU authors and other writers such s Paul Tillich, Thomas Merton, and Thich Nhat Hanh are studied and discussed. It is a place to share opinions while providing basic nurture for our souls, through meditation. Paz y Armonia Center seeks and encourages contact and visits from UUs around the world.
