OMD Rocky River Social Action Youth Con
Type of event: Conference
Sponsor: Central East Region of the UUA
This event is our annual Social Action CON or SAC. Please note there will be no off-site activities for the conference.
We will be joined by West Shore Allies Against Human Trafficking (WAAHT) a social justice ministry of our host congregation and a representative of the Renee Jones Empowerment Center.
Human Trafficking is a crime and an affront to the Unitarian Universalist belief in the worth and dignity of each human being. All people on earth have an equal claim to life, liberty, and justice, and no idea, ideal, or philosophy is superior to a single human life. WAAHT was formed in the spirit of these beliefs and principles.
The mission of WAAHT is to “Educate to Eradicate” the scourge of Human Trafficking.
Human Trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery perpetrated through the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for a commercial sex act or labor or services, and involving the use of force, fraud, or coercion.
There will be a presentation that all are encouraged to attend followed by questions and discussion, art and music activities, letter writing, and the packaging of hygiene items for distribution to survivors.
Please be aware that there will be dignified but frank references to the sex involved in Human Trafficking. As always in our community there will be chaplains available to anyone who needs support.
All attendees are asked, if they are able, to bring TRAVEL-SIZED toiletry items to donate to the Renee Jones Empowerment Center for the support of survivors. Please talk to other youth and your advisors in your congregation about the possibility of soliciting donations from your congregation. Examples of welcome items are: Lotions, toothpastes, toothbrushes, tampons and pads, menstrual hygiene products, deodorant, tissues, wipes, and hand sanitizer.
Capacity for this event is 90 youth. If the form is closed and we are not yet at the deadline, please contact the registrar to be placed on the waiting list. The required youth to adult ratio is 8:1.
Fee: $25 per youth, $20 for the second youth from a family, $15 for the third youth from a family.
New this year, you may pay by credit card when you register, however that will increase your fee by $1 per person. If you pay by check or cash, you must bring that with you to the con. No credit card payments on site.
If you are unable to pay the full registration fee and need a full or partial waiver you may request that on the registration form. You will be notified if your request is denied. Please bring your partial payment with you. Payment must be made in cash or by check made payable to UUA-CER. You cannot make a partial payment via credit card.
If this is your first conference, please read the Behavioral Expectations which describes our expectations of youth and adults attending youth events in the region and the CER Youth Event Procedures and Requirements. You will be asked about these documents in the registration process.
Register as a Youth.
Registration for youth closes March 6.
Register as an adult sponsor
Registration for adults closes March 13.
Please note that all adults who attend must be registered by their congregation as an approved adult. If this has not yet happened, please talk with your religious educator or other congregational leader.
Note to Adult Sponsors: Please be aware that our presentation portion of the Saturday afternoon programming will be in the Sanctuary. This is the same location as the adult sleeping quarters, so a section will be cordoned off to avoid when setting up your belongings. Also, if you do not plan to attend the presentation and need to rest during that time see an adult co-chair for an alternative quiet location.
