Governance

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is a voluntary association of autonomous, self-governing local churches and fellowships, which have freely chosen to pursue common goals together. The Association’s polity is congregational; Association decisions are made by congregational delegates in business sessions at the annual General Assembly.

The UUA is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of District Trustees (elected by congregations in the various Districts), and at-large Trustees, (elected by congregational delegates to the General Assembly). The Board of Trustees meets quarterly.

As chief governance officer, Gini Courter, UUA Moderator, presides at the General Assembly and at meetings of the Board of Trustees.

As chief executive officer, Rev. William G. Sinkford, UUA President, is responsible for the programs and administrative policies of the Association and is the Association's chief spokesperson.

A Financial Advisor (currently, Dan Brody) is elected by congregational delegates to the General Assembly. The Financial Advisor serves on the Board of Trustees, and provides the President, Board of Trustees, and General Assembly with an independent and expert evaluation of financial issues and the fiscal health of the UUA.

The Executive Vice President, Kay Montgomery (kmontgomery @ uua.org), is responsible, under the supervision of the President, for the day-to-day management of the Association. The Executive Vice President maintains close consultation with the President in the formulation of policy, implements the President's instructions, and acts in the absence of the President on the Association's behalf.

The Office of the Executive Vice President maintains liaison with the Board of Trustees and with Associate Members and Independent Affiliate Organizations.

The Treasurer and Vice President of Finance, Tim Brennan (tbrennan @ uua.org), is the chief financial officer of the Association and is responsible for all of its financial affairs. The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the UUA's annual audit and other financial reports as issued by the Financial Services staff group.
