Centre for Workers' Management

Since its registration as a society in 1991, the Centre for Workers' Management (CWM) has been involved in various activities related to research, training, issue-based advice and campaign and information dissemination on areas of industrial democracy and workers' rights. The organization has a constituency of workers and workers' organizations with which it interacts actively. CWM's long-term goal is for trade unions to expand democratic process in industry and in the economy. Its immediate objectives are to:

  • aid trade unions in their understanding of industry and the economy.
  • assist trade unions in using this understanding for more effective collective bargaining.
  • facilitate the expansion of a trade union network with a common set of objectives.
  • provide trade unions with research and campaign support on legislative and policy changes that affect work, wages, industry and the economy.

CWM's operation covers the entire country and currently they have long term association with the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI). CWM has facilitated the growth and expansion of union membership, formation of an all women's trade union and has extensively campaigned for social security legislation for unorganized workers. In the last few years NTUI has grown from 6 unions to 21 unions and from a membership of 68,000 to 420,000 members.
